Screeching Tires, Why Does it Happen?

by admin on March 28, 2010

Screeching tires make an awesome sound when you are trying to impress your friends, or even if you just want to make it appear as if you are going fast. It is possible that your tire screeching may even happen when you don’t want them to. In this scenario you are trying to run to the supermarket to find the cheapest groceries, and when you turn in the parking lot, with tires screeching, going 5/mph people stare at you like you are a maniac. So what is causing the screeching now?

The screeching sound can be caused by several different factors, but some of the most common are:

1. Your front wheels are out of alignment:  improper alignment can cause increased friction on the road. You may hear screeching tires when turning because one wheel may be working harder than the other, or one is contacting the ground more than the other causing the squealing sound.

2. Under-inflation/over-inflation: either variable is not good for your wheels and may be causing excessive wear on your treads. Quality pressure gauges are fairly inexpensive and can tell you if your pressure is excessive or too low. This is a quick fix and is often the most common cause of those squealing wheels when turning corners.

3. Treads and road surfaces: if you notice your tires screeching at certain times during your commute, in certain locations you may find that the road is slicker allowing your wheels to skip or break contact with the road which may cause a squealing sound. If your treads on your wheels are worn down you may find that your wheels may start squealing because they may breifly loose contact with the road and skip. You may also find that your vehicle skids as you turn which mat also make the sound of screeching tires without working treads.
